Sharks and rays, or rather elasmobranchs have been thriving on planet earth’s oceans in many different forms for four hundred million years. Widely revered, often as sacred species, sharks do attack humans…now and then: estimates suggest about 10 shark attacks per year. Meanwhile, humans are responsible for about 100 million shark deaths per year for one reason or another including deliberate finning, bycatch, persecution and sport-fishing. That’s about 2,850 every fifteen minutes- or about the length of time for a good cup of tea. Maybe this is all a storm in a tea-cup , but without these keystone species we will see trophic landslides destroying finely tuned ecosystems worldwide. Let’s take a bite out of that problem and support shark protection worldwide.
